Patented engine revolution
Even for those who are not great lovers of cars and engines, it is easy to be fascinated by the potential of the invention that Swedish-based firm Cargine AB is working on. It is creating the preconditions that will enable fuel consumption to be halved, together with a result that is at least equally positive and a reduced burden on the environment, not to mention a doubling in performance.

We first come across a handful of long-haired cattle from an ancient race from the Scottish Highlands, peacefully walking around in the snow in an otherwise virtually desolate landscape. On a farm a few miles out of Södertälje, behind a derelict barn, there lies a modern laboratory used for testing engines. This is where inventor Mats Hedman and his two partners, Urban Carlson, MD, and Anders Höglund, engine researcher, from Swedish-based firm Cargine are working at full speed to test drive their invention, which is set to create a revolution in engines. “For over 100 years, vehicle manufacturers have been building engines by consistently having to compromise. Our invention provides the preconditions to build engines that are entirely without compromise,” claims Mats Hedman.

If you take today’s four-stroke engines – as has always been the case – the valves and, as a result, the fuel supply for the combustion is controlled through the action of mechanically activated camshafts. Cargine’s invention is based on the principle of replacing the camshaft with computer-
controlled pneumatic valve actuators.

Pneumatic valve actuators
“This development has been made possible thanks to the advent of the use of computer technology to control engines. Over the past ten years, many people have been trying to bring about data-controlled valve actuators, but no one before us has realised that air – pneumatics – would provide the right opportunities” points out Mats. Mats is standing in front of the test engine, holding the small revolutionary invention – the Cargine PVA (Pneumatic Valve Actuation) – in his hands. It can create combustion engines operating with optimum performance, whatever the number of rpms.

A wealth of opportunities
This technology has the chance to bring about the greatest change to affect the combustion engine in 100 years and represents a development which is of interest to all vehicle manufacturers, universities and researchers the world over. It is, of course, also a technology that needs to be protected.

Safeguarding value through patents
“Our patents are not only important, they also represent the preconditions for our future. At this point, I have to say that I am impressed by Brann like no other before. In particular, our patent consultant, Oskar Fröderberg, is very good at looking after our patent applications. Today, we have 15 patents protected the world over, and there is a constant flow of new parts for which we are seeking patents,” comments MD Urban Carlson. In 2006, the world’s fastest car, the exclusive Swedish-built sports car the “Koenigsegg”, will be premiered with the first engine fitted with Cargine PVA. The value-protected revolution can then begin.
